Cultural Literacy Requirement

The Cultural Literacy Requirement for the Global Certificate will ask you to complete eight literary reviews.  Four of those reviews must be books written by non-American authors and must relate to issues outside of the United States or struggles of non American cultures fitting into the United States.  The second four literary reviews can also be books, or reviews of other global/cultural types of media such as foreign films, an international art exhibit or music exibition.  You will need to create a review (write up or other type of review) to show your understanding and growth in global perspectives.  Each review will be submitted to your Global Team Member and will be graded using the Literary Rubric.  You must score a 3 or 4 on each review to fulfill this requirement.  To see the list of books currently approved click on the document icon below.

Global Scholars Book List

To find a book for the global certificate use the list provided to the right.  If you find a book that is not on the list check these two questions to the right.  If the answer is yes, then your book should qualify.  If you are still in question consult your global mentor.
1.  Is the author originally from a country other than the United States?
2.  Does the book take place outside of the United States or show multicultural conflict within the United States?

Movie List

To find a movie for the global certificate literacy requirement you may use the list provided.  Click on the book list, and find the tab on the bottom of the page that is labeled "Films."  The list will also identify where you can find the movie, (Netflix, Disney, etc.)
Keep in mind this list is a working document.  If you know of a film please tell your global mentor about adding it to the list.  If you are interested in a film that is not on the list refer to the questions on the right.  If the answers are yes, then the film may qualify.  If you have additional questions, please consult your global mentor.
1. Is the screenwriter and/or director from outside the United States?
2.  Does the movie/documentary take place outside the United States or does it involve a global issue (ex. Migration and cultural issues traveling in the United States)?

Reflection Sheet

For each book, movie or other cultural literary activity a reflection sheet must be completed.  You may download the document on the right to guide your reflection.  You may also visit your google classroom to find a document that you may type directly on and turn in electronically to your global mentor.
