COVID-19 is a global pandemic that has severely impacted the every day life for billions of people around the world. The Global Certificate team here at MHS wanted to use it as an opportunity for students to get connected with viewpoints and news media from around the world. For this reason we have created a "Global Literacy" assignment that students can use toward earning the global certificate.
Traditionally the Global Literacy requirement requires students to complete eight literary reflections, with a minimum of four being books. When we first started the program it was also suggested that students compare news media from different parts of the world as a way to access global perspectives on current issues. While this has not been done yet with any of our students, the COVID-19 pandemic has presented a great opportunity to open up this option for the Literacy requirement. As COVID-19 infection rates are climbing sharply in the United States, Wisconsin and our own county of Waukesha, other countries have a declining trend such as Iceland and Ireland. These observations make observers ask "why?" Are those countries dealing with the pandemic differently? Are they testing differently to get different results? There are many great questions and inquiries that could be explored and we want to encourage our students to do so.
Today students were presented with the option of investigating COVID-19 statistics and news media by looking up statistics, comparing news reports from three different news sources from three different countries as well as additional research to build an understanding of global perspective around the virus. The actual assignment can be found on google classroom or here in this post.
The assignment is very open ended and provides merely a snapshot of perspectives from other parts of the world related to the pandemic. We hope it is this kind of snap shot that encourages lifelong learning and a willingness to look at a problem from the various angles that world perspectives provide in order to find future solutions.
